Heavenly Stems & Earthly Branches
The 60-Day Cycle Explained
The Heavenly Stems (天干) and Earthly Branches (地支) form the fundamental building blocks of Chinese astrology, traditional calendar systems, and metaphysical analysis. Together, they create a 60-cycle combination system that has been used for over two millennia to track time, analyze destiny, and understand cosmic patterns.
This system is not merely a calendar — it's a sophisticated framework for understanding the quality of time, the characteristics of periods, and the energetic signatures of moments. Every year, month, day, and hour in the traditional Chinese calendar is defined by a Stem-Branch combination.
The Ten Heavenly Stems (天干)
The Heavenly Stems represent the pure elemental energies flowing from heaven. Each stem combines one of the Five Elements with either Yin or Yang polarity, creating ten distinct energetic signatures.
| Stem | Element | Polarity | Nature |
|---|---|---|---|
| Jia 甲 | Wood | Yang | Tall tree, leadership, upward growth |
| Yi 乙 | Wood | Yin | Flower, flexibility, bending adaptability |
| Bing 丙 | Fire | Yang | Sun, illumination, outward expression |
| Ding 丁 | Fire | Yin | Candle flame, refinement, inner warmth |
| Wu 戊 | Earth | Yang | Mountain, stability, firm boundaries |
| Ji 己 | Earth | Yin | Garden soil, nurturing, cultivation |
| Geng 庚 | Metal | Yang | Axe, determination, cutting through |
| Xin 辛 | Metal | Yin | Jewelry, precision, delicate beauty |
| Ren 壬 | Water | Yang | Ocean, vast flow, powerful currents |
| Gui 癸 | Water | Yin | Rain, mist, gentle intuition |
The Twelve Earthly Branches (地支)
The Earthly Branches represent how heavenly energy manifests on earth. Each branch corresponds to an animal in the Chinese zodiac and contains complex elemental compositions including a main element, hidden stems, and seasonal influences.
| Branch | Animal | Element | Season/Time |
|---|---|---|---|
| Zi 子 | Rat | Water | Winter / 11pm-1am |
| Chou 丑 | Ox | Earth | Late Winter / 1am-3am |
| Yin 寅 | Tiger | Wood | Spring / 3am-5am |
| Mao 卯 | Rabbit | Wood | Spring / 5am-7am |
| Chen 辰 | Dragon | Earth | Late Spring / 7am-9am |
| Si 巳 | Snake | Fire | Summer / 9am-11am |
| Wu 午 | Horse | Fire | Summer / 11am-1pm |
| Wei 未 | Goat | Earth | Late Summer / 1pm-3pm |
| Shen 申 | Monkey | Metal | Autumn / 3pm-5pm |
| You 酉 | Rooster | Metal | Autumn / 5pm-7pm |
| Xu 戌 | Dog | Earth | Late Autumn / 7pm-9pm |
| Hai 亥 | Pig | Water | Winter / 9pm-11pm |
The 60-Year Cycle
When the 10 Heavenly Stems and 12 Earthly Branches combine, they create a 60-unit cycle (the least common multiple of 10 and 12). This Sexagenary Cycle has been used to mark years, months, days, and hours for thousands of years.
The cycle begins with Jia-Zi (甲子), the first stem paired with the first branch. Because there are more branches than stems, the pairing continues sequentially: Yi-Chou (乙丑), Bing-Yin (丙寅), and so on. When the stems complete their 10-unit cycle, they start again while the branches continue, creating the unique 60 combinations.
How the Cycle Works
Year 1: Jia 甲 + Zi 子 = Jia-Zi 甲子 (Wood Rat)
Year 2: Yi 乙 + Chou 丑 = Yi-Chou 乙丑 (Wood Ox)
Year 3: Bing 丙 + Yin 寅 = Bing-Yin 丙寅 (Fire Tiger)
...continuing for 60 years...
Year 60: Gui 癸 + Hai 亥 = Gui-Hai 癸亥 (Water Pig), then cycle repeats
Stem-Branch Combinations
Not all stem-branch combinations are equally harmonious. Some combinations create special relationships that enhance or transform the energy:
Combination (合)
Certain stems and branches combine to create new elemental energy. For example, Wu 戊 + Gui 癸 combines to form Fire.
Clash (冲)
Opposite branches clash, creating tension and change. Zi 子 (Rat) clashes with Wu 午 (Horse).
Harm (害)
Hidden conflicts between certain branches that create subtle disharmony.
Punishment (刑)
Triple branch relationships that create complex karmic patterns.
Zodiac Animals and Their Meanings
The 12 Earthly Branches are commonly known through their associated zodiac animals. Each animal carries symbolic meaning and personality characteristics that influence the energy of any year, month, or hour they govern.
| Animal | Branch | Key Traits |

| Ox | Chou 丑 | Diligent, dependable, strong, methodical |
| Tiger | Yin 寅 | Brave, confident, competitive, magnetic |
| Rabbit | Mao 卯 | Gentle, elegant, artistic, diplomatic |
| Dragon | Chen 辰 | Powerful, ambitious, charismatic, lucky |
| Snake | Si 巳 | Wise, mysterious, intuitive, determined |
| Horse | Wu 午 | Energetic, independent, passionate, free |

Applications in Daily Life
Understanding the Stems and Branches allows you to work with time rather than against it. Each day carries a unique energetic signature based on its Stem-Branch combination. Some days are favorable for beginning new projects, while others are better for completion or rest.
In BaZi astrology, your birth chart consists of four Stem-Branch pairs — one each for your year, month, day, and hour of birth. These eight characters (八字) reveal your elemental composition, personality patterns, and life path.
