What is BaZi?

A Complete Guide to Chinese Four Pillars Astrology

BaZi (八字), literally meaning "Eight Characters," is one of the most sophisticated and ancient systems of destiny analysis in the world. Dating back over 2,000 years to the Han Dynasty, this Chinese metaphysical art uses your birth date and time to create a detailed energetic blueprint of your life.

Unlike Western astrology, which focuses primarily on the position of the sun at birth, BaZi examines the complete cosmic configuration at your moment of birth — the year, month, day, and hour. Each of these time units contains two characters: one Heavenly Stem and one Earthly Branch. Together, they form your Four Pillars (四柱), containing the eight characters that reveal your destiny.

The Four Pillars Explained

Each pillar represents a different dimension of your life:

Year Pillar

Ancestors, early life, outer personality

0-18 years · Grandparents, elders, society

Month Pillar

Parents, career foundation, young adulthood

18-35 years · Parents, siblings, peers

Day Pillar

Yourself, spouse, core identity

35-55 years · Self, spouse, partner

Hour Pillar

Children, later life, inner self

55+ years · Children, subordinates

The Ten Heavenly Stems

The Heavenly Stems (天干) represent the pure elemental energies of the universe. There are ten stems, each associated with one of the Five Elements (Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal, Water) and classified as either Yin or Yang:

StemElementYin/YangNature
Jia 甲WoodYangTall tree, leadership
Yi 乙WoodYinFlower, flexibility
Bing 丙FireYangSun, expression
Ding 丁FireYinCandle, refinement
Wu 戊EarthYangMountain, stability
Ji 己EarthYinSoil, nurturing
Geng 庚MetalYangAxe, determination
Xin 辛MetalYinJewelry, precision
Ren 壬WaterYangOcean, flow
Gui 癸WaterYinRain, intuition

The Day Master: Your Core Identity

The most important element in your BaZi chart is the Day Master — the Heavenly Stem of your Day Pillar. This represents your core personality, your authentic self, and how you interact with the world.

Think of the Day Master as the protagonist in the story of your life. All other elements in your chart — the other three stems, the four branches, the hidden stems within the branches — represent the supporting characters, the environment, and the timing of events.

The Five Elements (Wu Xing)

BaZi analysis centers on the Five Elements and their interactions. Each element has a generating (supporting) and controlling (regulating) relationship with the others:

Generating Cycle (相生)

Wood feeds Fire → Fire creates Earth (ash) → Earth bears Metal → Metal carries Water → Water nourishes Wood

Controlling Cycle (相克)

Wood parts Earth → Earth absorbs Water → Water extinguishes Fire → Fire melts Metal → Metal chops Wood

Luck Pillars: Your Timing

Beyond the static birth chart, BaZi includes Luck Pillars (大运) — 10-year cycles that show how your fortune shifts over time. Each Luck Pillar brings different elemental energies, creating periods of opportunity, challenge, or transformation.

Understanding your Luck Pillars helps you answer crucial questions: When should I start a business? When is the right time to marry? When should I lay low and cultivate? BaZi doesn't just tell you who you are — it tells you when.
